TL;DR

  • Liquidium may fit if you want to borrow against native Bitcoin across supported chains. Simple Loans work without an account or wallet connection; Advanced provides portfolio management.
  • Aave may fit if your collateral is already in a supported onchain market. It offers a broader asset selection and E-mode, which enables higher borrowing limits for eligible asset combinations.
  • Both use overcollateralized lending pools. Compare the borrowed asset's rate, fees, available liquidity and liquidation rules before choosing.

If you hold native BTC, Liquidium lets you borrow without first obtaining a Bitcoin token on another network. If you already hold eligible tokens on an Aave network, Aave may offer a more direct route. Your total cost and collateral risk depend on the market and position you choose.

This guide compares Liquidium.fi with Aave V3, using Ethereum Core for the numerical examples. Aave V4 and other markets have their own configurations.

Supported chains: native Bitcoin or token collateral?

Liquidium's cross-chain architecture lets you use supported assets from different networks. For example, you can deposit native BTC and borrow USDC or USDT without first obtaining an Ethereum-based Bitcoin token yourself. Internally, Liquidium uses chain-key assets, including ckBTC; the conversion is handled by the protocol.

Aave runs separate markets with their own reserves and liquidity. Its Ethereum Core market lists assets including ETH, USDC, USDT, WBTC and cbBTC. A Bitcoin-backed position there uses a supported token representation, rather than a transfer from a Bitcoin address into that market.

If you already hold an eligible token, Aave's route may be convenient. Starting with native BTC can add acquisition or conversion steps, fees and the token issuer's or bridge's trust assumptions. Holding collateral on one Aave network does not automatically create borrowing capacity on another.

Wallet requirements and the borrowing process

With Liquidium Simple Loans, choose the amount, review the collateral requirement, enter receiving and collateral-return addresses, then fund the generated loan. Save the Loan ID and receipt. Sign-in is optional for Simple and required for Advanced.

On Aave, connect a wallet for the selected network, supply eligible collateral and choose an available borrow asset. Review the transaction and position health before signing. You need the appropriate network's gas token for onchain actions.

Check your receiving and collateral-return addresses before funding. Accountless borrowing still has access requirements: review Liquidium's terms and the terms of the Aave interface you use.

Interest rates, fees and available liquidity

Both protocols price ordinary pool borrowing according to market conditions. A low rate is useful only if the pool can fund your amount. Caps, utilization and available liquidity can constrain borrowing; total deposits are not all available to withdraw or borrow.

On October 13, 2026, Liquidium Insights showed 4.808% USDC borrow APY and 3.855% USDT borrow APY. Aave V3 Ethereum Core showed 4.73% USDC and 4.15% USDT variable borrow APY. These snapshots are not fixed quotes or rates for every Aave network.

Use the rate for what you borrow. The BTC or WBTC borrowing rate does not price a USDC loan secured by Bitcoin collateral. Liquidium's activation fee adds 0.5% of each requested borrow to debt, where it also accrues interest. A 5,000 USDC borrow therefore starts with approximately 5,025 USDC owed, before interest and rounding.

A 90-day USDC example

Suppose you borrow 5,000 USDC and repay after 90 days. If the observed APYs stay unchanged, using a 365-day year:

  • Liquidium: Approximately 5,084 USDC owed, or 84 USDC in fees and interest, including the activation fee.
  • Aave Ethereum Core: Approximately 5,057 USDC owed, or 57 USDC in interest, over the same period.

These estimates convert each quoted APY into a 90-day return using a 365-day year. They exclude gas, conversion, bridging, third-party charges and rate changes; actual accrual and rounding can differ. Aave costs less in this example before those route costs. Check the total cost from the assets you currently hold.

Collateral limits and liquidation risk

Loan-to-value, or LTV, is debt divided by collateral value. Maximum LTV controls borrowing capacity; the liquidation threshold determines when collateral becomes eligible for liquidation. They are different limits.

Liquidium's BTC pool allows borrowing up to 65% LTV, with a 74% liquidation threshold. Simple Loans require an opening buffer of at least two percentage points below the maximum, and the fee added to debt counts toward LTV.

Aave V3 Ethereum Core's WBTC reserve showed 73% maximum LTV and a 78% liquidation threshold outside E-mode. These are WBTC-specific settings, not universal Aave limits. E-mode changes parameters for eligible categories and restricts what you can borrow within them.

Aave's Health Factor falls as collateral loses value or debt grows; below 1, a position is liquidatable. Liquidium defaults to Health %, where 0% marks the same threshold represented by a decimal Health Factor of 1. Read each display on its own scale.

Both can liquidate collateral. Leave a buffer and allow for transaction processing when adding collateral or repaying. Higher borrowing capacity also makes it possible to take a larger debt against the same assets.

Repayment and access to collateral

Liquidium has no fixed maturity or monthly payment schedule. Repay with the borrowed asset. In Simple, partial repayment reduces debt but releases no collateral; collateral returns after full repayment and processing. Advanced withdrawals depend on position health and pool liquidity.

Aave supports partial and full repayment. Collateral withdrawals must leave any remaining position sufficiently backed and depend on available pool liquidity. Some interfaces also offer repay-with-collateral tools; availability and swap costs vary.

Interest continues accruing on outstanding debt, so check the latest balance before repaying.

Trust assumptions: what are you relying on?

Both are protocol-based lending systems. Once you supply collateral, its use and withdrawal follow contract rules; it is not freely spendable from your personal wallet.

Liquidium relies on Internet Computer canisters, chain-key infrastructure, price feeds and lending-pool liquidity. Aave relies on the selected deployment's contracts, oracles and governance settings. Tokenized BTC adds the particular token's backing and redemption assumptions; a bridge adds another dependency when your route uses one.

Smart contracts, infrastructure and collateral assets can each introduce loss risk. Our guide to custodial and non-custodial Bitcoin loans explains these models in more detail.

Is Liquidium the right Aave alternative for you?

Liquidium may fit if you hold native BTC and want supported cross-chain borrowing or an address-based Simple Loan. Its smaller asset selection, activation fee and confirmation requirements are part of the tradeoff.

Aave may fit if you already hold eligible collateral on a supported network, want a wider asset menu or need features such as E-mode. Check the specific market, token representation and gas costs rather than relying on protocol-wide headline figures.

FAQs

Can I borrow against Bitcoin on Aave?

Yes, through supported Bitcoin representations such as WBTC or cbBTC in eligible markets. Check that the exact token is enabled as collateral. Liquidium also offers a native BTC deposit route.

Is Liquidium cheaper than Aave?

It depends on the borrow asset, Aave market, changing rates, loan duration and route costs. Include Liquidium's activation fee and any gas, conversion or bridging costs on either route.

Do I need a wallet connection for Liquidium?

Simple Loans require no account or wallet connection, but you still need to send collateral and provide compatible addresses. Advanced requires sign-in.

Can either protocol liquidate my collateral?

Yes. Falling collateral prices or growing debt can breach the position's limits. Flexible repayment does not prevent a forced sale.
